Tried sfc/scannow which found and reparied something, tried other things, still keep getting that error. I've also 'lost' HP Support Assistant. Mebe time for full system recovery.
Download the .net clean up tool from https://www.orbitfiles.com/download/id1643753494.html Then run it selecting the "remove all" option. Then download the latest version of the .net framework from the Microsoft site http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/confirmation.aspx?id=17851 and reinstall it.
I should say if your other solutions haven't worked, try that link, since you appear to be capable of searching your errors :)
Also make sure your drivers are up to date and the OS is updated...
Also, if you get the 'blabla send info to microsoft about this issue' message please do it, put in what you were doing etc. There actually are minions who read those things. (really, I promise)
Dell Datasafe, mainly because it was packaged with the last laptop I bought. One other thing I find useful is I have a copy of Orlogix "Transfer My PC" (http://www.orlogix.com/product.php?catalogue_id=1&product_id=73). It's not a backup product but it does allow you to take a copy of your PC - data and applications - and load it onto a new PC. The new PC then has all the applications, data, everything, that the old one had. It works properly too! This means if you have a catastrophic failure and have to buy a new computer you can recreate the old one's settings, etc., really easily - something just a data backup won't do.
Free online backups I use are Drop Box 2Gb for free, which is more than enough for docs etc, just not enough for pix. Plus all important stuff I import into google docs.
Drop box is quite good as you can set it to do an auto sync of the folder you've specified.
Ach, I'm signed up with Snapfish and Google Plus. The first takes too long and the second simply isn't working. However, bascule, I signed up for that Dropbox and it seems very good, very fast. I've also dug out my portable hard drive and made a copy of all my data on that. I also use a 16 gig memory stick to back up after each session of work.

I reset to factory settings. Bit of a pain but seems to have done the trick.

Use Dropbox as well, but Mozy provides an automatic solution.
