Polity Encyclopedia

Just having a little look around the Internet and I came upon this again. I'd completely forgotten about it. Some time ago I provided Macmillan with an encyclopedia incorporating all those 'How It Is' (by Gordon) and other little segments from my books. You can find it here.

From "How it is by Gordon". I would love to see Gordon's story.

Or is Gordon just Neal Asher, the result of a conversation with yourself when trying to take a broad perspective from a number of angles to get definition.

It's a brilliant device, like the retroacts.

Cool! You hand this out to translators? Might be useful to get a grasp of the context...

Very smart, if a bit spoilerish for newbs like me. It has prompted a question too, but I'll save that for the next time you do a video session.

is there a description for the spittin' dragon whazzit from Brass Man?

Michael, there's a previous post asking for questions, which I will get to at some point.

Vaude, no, the droon isn't detailed in there. Be a good one for the art competition...

you read my hint. droon. z or j shaped neck, um, head. ack. was a great read, damned if i can recall the size of its love handles.

I'll copy descriptions from Brass Man and put them up on Subminds, Vaude. Remember the head shaped like ziggurat?

knew there was a z under that napalm hose.

I'm reading the "Polity Encyclopedia" and there are several references to "Quiet War". I cannot find it in any of Neal's books or short stories.

Ironically, I just read Paul McAuley's "The Quiet War". Which actually could be the war referred to in the encyclopedia.

Sorry if I sound like a naif but, this is an area of ignorance.

RFYork, the Quiet War is referred to throughout the books from Brass Man onward, which was published 3 years before Paul McAuley's book. In fact the bit you read in the encyclopedia is probably one of the chapter starts from Brass Man. I'll maybe do a book about the 'quiet' AI takeover, but of course I won't be able to use that title!

suggestion: The Robot Wars. nice ring to it eh? no?? how about An Indistinct Machine Whisper Into Dimmed Human Craw. eh? NO?

droon time. a mouthful.

book about the 'quiet' AI takeover - that would indeed be cool. While I think a lot of your readers are most intrigued by your creative monsters and others by your great "planet-building", I was (from the start in Gridlinked on) most interested in how this future society with Humans, AIs and Golems would be like and how it would work (I only later found out about haimans, I always wondered why Skaidon should be the only one and I am still not clear why no one went exactly the same way he did, there should be enough scientists happy to die for the kind of immortality their name can reach by connecting with an AI, burning out, but leaping science forward in the process). I find those "social questions" in the polity universe especially interesting, because in Banks work (where the AIs play a role quite similar and there are a lot of other similatities like some of the AIs growing tired or bored of carbon-lifeforms) the culture doesn't come from earth, or at least it doesn't matter so much what kind of society it evolved from, as it is far far away from that, while in the polity our earth is still the center and "old rules" still have influence. For the little pieces of information about earth and the society of ordinary humans I loved the Shadow of the Scorpion, more than for the actual cormac-storyline.
So something about the Quiet War would be really great, I will be looking forward to that one even more than for the owner book. I will surely read any other polizy projects as well, but now you really got me hooked, Neal! :-)

Hi Neal, the link here seems to be broken. However, really glad you made a compilation of Gordon quotes :) - who is Gordon? A sector AI?
