A Non-Smoker Writes...

Here's a pretty balanced view on smoking. Go read it all.

A year to 18 months ago I was a non-smoker who was anti-smoking - not to the extent where I would challenge strangers who were smokers or seek to embarrass them, but certainly someone who supported the evermore restrictive practices placed upon those wishing to smoke.

So it was one of the most unexpected shift in my thinking over the past year to become pro-smoking - or rather pro the right to choose to smoke.

I have a very simple view on smoking.

I agree that if a smoker wants to smoke they should be allowed to.

However, I also agree that nobody should be forced to smell or breathe in that same smoke if they do not want to. It is the exact same side of the "rights" coin.

So, ban public smoking in its entirety and then let people smoke away in thier own homes or other peoples homes should they let them.

Sorry smoky people, but you cannot have it both ways. You want your rights, I want the same. Fair is fair.

And now I read the actual blog...

Seems I agree with that guy. A very fair view and one held by most people I know tbh, but then again most people I know I like therefore they are like me... if ya get what I mean.

Banning smoking in ones home is idiotic and just another addition to the nanny state. We should, as mature and sane humans, have a right to do what we wish so long as it doesn't impede other humans who have the opposite wish. Smoking in your home is one of these things.

Then again I also think its about time certain drugs became legal again and consensual euthanasia became law.

i just have a problem with this part

"There might be the tiniest evidence that in certain extreme circumstances (i.e. lock someone in a room for a smoker for a number of years without a supply of 'fresh' air) "

only because the Frieberthausers figured out a lot of stuff (black goo in vinyards puzzle-solving), hell of a family reading science fiction
here in California:

downloads.hindawi.com/journals/cdi/2003/943181.pdf

lot of mycellium goin on. not bunk either.

..but i agree, if we dont want the plague, we should stay in the castle where the black death doesn't hover from the well cursing. this is 2000 b.c. right? no baths for me til the end of next Lughnasadh and fairy twig on the porch blows off.

heh.

Neal, thanks for the mention - 'much appreciated. Great site, BTW.

Hitch, glad you took time to read it. Smoking in the home is the biggest no brainer. There cannot be any argument. Outside of the home, I just think that if we remember we are all human and talk to each other as such, then 9 times out of 10 it will be resolved. So many are angry at the moment (including me) but too many of those are directing their ire at their fellow man. Concentrate on the cause of this: the ever growing state.

VVR - (have you the longest blogging name?). From what I can tell, those sources that *seem* most independent tend to dismiss second hand smoke as a damaging effect. But, as you say, regardless the state's response is disproportionate and unnecessary.

Oh, and Neal, be honest, were you going to link to that BBC report before you read it on my blog? :-)

It's actually my favourite part of blogging - that we share matters of interest so easily...

Cheers,

When you say so-and-so should be banned you should always remember that you are handing over personal power and responsibility to government. And always, when you think 'I don't smoke so I don't care' the words of Martin Niemцller should be remembered:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Yes, FAV, I found out about that BBC thing through your blog, which is now in my favourites. My apologies, I'll stick a couple of H/Ts up. Cheers.
