Library Thing

I've just joined up on The Library Thing, which seems pretty lively. Masses of reviews on there from the readers and lots of handy book suggestions. I rather like one comment I got there from a poster called 'andyl' (emphasis mine):

Yeah apart from Cowl Neal's books fall into two broad camps

1) Fast-paced super-spy secret agent types.
2) Very visceral novels about the alien environment of Spatterjay which someone summed up as "Blood, guts, and hundred-ton-sentient-mollusc rape." and which if I was Neal I would insist appear on the covers of all the Spatterjay novels.

However apart from those I really like the Mason's Rats short stories which are completely divorced from the Spatterjay / Polity setting.

Yea its a pretty cool site is LT, a great way of cataloguing all your books!
Also check out Goodreads, which is kind of like Facebook but without all the games and other crap-it just deals with books and book lovers
(youre listed on there Neal)

There are so many of these book networking sites it's hard to keep up, I added the Books Read app to my facebook, then signed up to Shelfari, then Goodreads, and now there's this kid on the block, Library Thing. When do I get the time to read anything, I'm too busy networking!

hundred ton mollusk rape should be on the cover of all the spatterjay books. basically, hundred ton mollusk rape works for me, & am assuming everyone else feels this way.

i did a fat handful of reviews of books for a while, but the only people that would read the blabs didnt read the books until i pushed the book into their hands. direct contact works for me. i have to be raving in their face raving, slobbering, drooling, about it to get any kind of response. very few exceptions.

Ah but MICHAEL, I don't use LT for networking, for me its a way of cataloguing my book collection. I only found out about the networking side of it later

Actually, LibraryThing is the "old man" of the group, having been around over a year before Goodreads or Shelfari. That's an epoch in Internet time. LT isn't THE first, but it's older than these rapscallions.

I really researched all three when trying to decide where to catalog my library. I found LT to be head and shoulders above the rest. The others just didn't have the features, the design (LT trends closer to a clean and functional Google-ish design) or the amount of thought put into them as places for serious book lovers.

The only trouble with LT is you can only review a book that you actually own. If its a book you borrowed and read you can't comment on it-something you can do on Goodreads.

True, though you don't have to own a book to put it in your collections. There's even specifically a collection for "Read but unowned."

Goodreads is better the LT because you can display a status update bar on the book your currently reading and Goodreads meshes better with Blogger.

Pan, read but unowned huh, that must be a recent addition!

I hate to feel like I'm "selling" LT to people, but I just can't help but answer replies. :D

LibraryThing has a pretty comprehensive set of widgets. You can display your currently reading collection or ANY collection you want using them. There's graphically versions and textual versions. You can even make search widgets. I admit that I don't use blogger, but the LT blog uses blogger and that's where they posted the widget examples so I'm not sure how GR would "mesh" better with Blogger.
